The Pusan National University Museum was established with the purpose of contributing to academic research and social education, as well as to the development of local culture. In order to meet this commitment, the museum excavates, collects, preserves and exhibits the cultural properties of Korea pertaining to the diverse disciplines such as archaeology, history, folklore and art history. Since the opening in 1964, the museum has helped students and the general public to appreciate the ancient and traditional cultures of Korea, and has continuously conducted surveys and excavations of the cultural properties in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do as a research institution of ancient cultures in the regions. From the latter part of the 1960¡¯s, the museum concentrated more on the study of the prehistoric and Gaya cultures of the southern part of Korea. The academic activities for the study include not only active excavations, but also the exchange of archaeological information and data, and the cooperative research with other institutions and scholars. Our museum features the archaeological collections, the majority of which have been acquired from academic excavations. The archaeological data collected through the formal researches have greater academic value than purchased artifacts which lost their original contexts in time and space. Therefore, researchers of the Korean ancient culture consider the collections of our museum as invaluable. In addition to the artifacts, the museum is famous for the collections of ancient skeletons. It keeps about a hundred and sixty bodies of ancient skeletons from the Yean-ri ancient tombs and about fifty bodies of ancient skeletons from the Neuk-do site of Samcheonpo. These skeletons are widely utilized in the physical anthropological studies of the ancient Korean people.
